Floating the Deschutes River in Bend: Plan Before You Go

Floating the Deschutes is one way to experience Bend from the water. It also takes preparation. Cold water, moving currents, and the rapids at Bend Whitewater Park deserve your attention.
Start with Bend Park and Recreation District’s current floating guide. Check its route information, access points, seasonal transportation details, and posted conditions before heading out.
Wear a life jacket, use equipment intended for river recreation, and choose secure footwear. Flip-flops can come off in the water. Secure your belongings and keep trash out of the river.
The fish ladder includes rapids and requires active participation. If you want to avoid that section, the district describes exiting before the Colorado Avenue bridge and walking to McKay Park to re-enter. Follow current signs and official directions rather than relying on an older video or article.
There are no lifeguards on the river. Consider everyone’s abilities and supervise children closely.
